Emil Gerbeaud 1854-1919

On November 8, 2019, Emil Gerbeaud (1854-1919), the famous confectioner and owner of a chocolate factory passed away a hundred years ago. Gerbeaud won international fame and recognition for the Hungarian confectionery industry. Our museum intended to commemorate its venerable figure with an exhibition; we would also like to show our visitors the Gerbeaud memories stored in our museum. Among others you can see: the bust of Emil Gerbeaud by sculptor Alajos Stróbl; turn-of-the-century dessert boxes designed by craftsmen; old photos of the Gerbeaud family and other interesting objects and documents.

Emil Gerbeaud introduced the cognac cherry, the cat tongue, the name of the beloved cakes and the beautiful confectionery on Vörösmarty square. Once they made countless bonbon, muffins, and desserts filled with Parisian cream. In his workshops and chocolate factories, his artistic products have reached far-flung parts of the world. In 1909, the Confectioners ‘and Gingerbread Manufacturers’ Association held a large-scale celebration of their 25 years of work in Hungary. Emil Gerbeaud and his wife, Eszter Ramseyer were recognized with many prestigious awards and honors throughout their lives. With his death the Hungarian confectionery industry lost a true role model.
