GELLÉRT 100

Gellért 100

The book is the accompanying publication of our temporary exhibition Gellért 100, which was organized on the centenary of one of the most patinated hotels in the capital, commemorates this imposing hotel. The foundations were dug in the years of peace, but the wall was already laid in the middle of the First World War. As soon as it opened, it was taken over by the occupying Romanian troops and then occupied by Horthy as headquarters. From the 1920s, the kitchen will be world-famous under the hand of Károly Gundel, the venue for big balls and gala dinners, and the medicinal water and the wave bath will attract tens of thousands. During the siege, a German military base and an emergency hospital operated in the basement. The reconstruction of the ruined hotel took place over decades. Today, it simultaneously shows the most beautiful face of the Hungarian Art Nouveau, the “retro” features of the interior design of the 1960s and 70s and all the virtues of 21st century hospitality. The hotel, whose history the reader can learn about, still preserves the traditions of hospitality and tourism.
